Curtis...I have a husqavarna zero turn that won't

Customer Question

Hi Curtis...I have a husqavarna zero turn that won't start...the battery is good, and I changed the solenoid. When I turn the key it doesn't even click. Also I'm not getting any voltage coming from the solenoid.

Check for fuse between starter solenoid and keyswitch!

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Checked 20a fuse and it was blown so I replaced it and now hear a click but still no voltage from solenoid and won't turn over
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

What is the battery voltage when key is turned to start?

Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

Can you tunrengine by hand?

Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

Can you turn engine by hand?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Engine won't turn
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

Remove spark plugs and see if it will.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
It's turning..it's just really stiff
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
12.4 from battery, 12.4 from battery to solenoid, 0 coming from solenoid
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

If you jump across solenoid will engine turn?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I just tried to start and got a click and the motor made a small click (attempt to turn over) then nothing
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
The 20a fuse is still good but this is the 3rd or 4th fuse I've put in it since it started acting up..it keeps blowing the 20a fuse which is why I changed solenoid
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
When you say jump across solenoid what do you mean? I'm sorry I'm not very engine savy
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

solenoid has two cable terminals, use old screwdriver to touch them together.

Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

Engine should spin. This is same connection solenoid should make,

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
It's clicking a lot but not spinning
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
The clicking is coming from the back of the engine
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

What is battery voltage when you try to start?

does it stay above 8 volts? If not , the battery or cables are fault, unless is the engine is damaged!

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
It's not turning over at all
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

Are we sure battery is good?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
The battery is good. It's reading 12.4 volts.
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

Fully charged battery will be 13.5 volts!

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Do you think it could be the ignition switch or the starter?
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

Without a voltmeter test, It's hard to tell. Battery voltage when starter is engaged is the key. If voltage drops below 8 volts, battery, id it stays up, starter may be bad. Jumping the solenoid is battery, cable and starter test.

Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

I doubt it is the keyswitch, but can be solenoid or starter.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
It's a brand new solenoid..what can cause a solenoid to go bad?
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

Then it is not solenoid!

Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

Have you ran battery test?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I tested battery with voltage meter..tested at a 12.4
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Sorry my husband asked a few questions while I ran to town...I will test batter while trying to start to see what voltage is
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

Ok, Maybe I can type in sentences now! I have been on the phone with Hughes net for two hours! If battery voltage is falls below 8 volts, battery is dead. 12.4 volts is just marginal at best!

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Voltage barely moved when I tried to turn mower on..also I'm no longer able to jump the solenoid..it only clicks when I turn the key
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

Good morning. What is battery voltage before you turn to start and what is it when you turn the key to start? I still question whether battery is good enough to start engine! Did I ask how old is the battery.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Battery is brand new 12.4 before key is turned and stays at 12.4 when key is turned. Also before when I tried to jump the solenoid the engine would click now I'm get nothing when I try to jump the solenoid. Should I try to charge up the battery and go from there?
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

Locate the ignition fuse and check it, sounds like at this point, the fuse may have blown. If you jump the two large terminals on the solenoid , does the engine spin? It should! this checks the battery, cables, and the starter.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Is this the 20a fuse or the 7.5a fuse? .nothing happens when I try to jump the solenoid now, no clicking or spinning
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

It would be the 20 amp. But jumping the solenoid bypasses all the fuses. With no action from the solenoid, either battery , cables or the starter is bad. Can you take jumper cables and go direct to the starter. Ground to the engine engine, positive to the stater terminal. If starter does not turn, the starter has to be bad.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
That worked..the engine spun as soon as I touched the starter
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
It didn't start but it kept spinning as long as I had the jumper on the starter
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

Ok, you don't have battery voltage to the solenoid. Check battery connections, battery and cables . Ground cable to frame and positive to the solenoid.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I messed with the cables and now am able to jump the solenoid and the engine turns but doesn't start
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

Have yo rechecked the fuse that was blown earlier? Do you have voltmeter to test light o see if the solenoid is getting voltage from the keyswitch?
