When I had an outboard motor "a mercury" I was having trouble with it. running the mechanic said it was the "stator. ." question spelling" is there such a part in my briggs 16 horse v-twin? I assume that this sends spark to the plug.

You do have a stator in your Briggs but all it does is to charge the battery and provide lights if you have lights on your machine.

If you have running issues it would more likely be the ignition module(s) on your Briggs.
