Customer Question

Everything on the Kohler is put back together but, I can't figure out why the engine will not turn over. I am not sure but there is a gear that fits into the flywheel and it is now in an upright and locked position.

Gear has to be down!

Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

If need be, loosen the starter to get gear loose.

Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

It has locked the engine.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Gear down, flywheel off. When I turn the key the starter engages, now what?
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

Will engine turn with wrench? What did you do to the engine?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Put a rag around the crank, tried to turn, no luck
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

Yes . the crankshaft should turn. Have you had lower pulleys off?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Lower pulleys are?
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

What the engine drives,

Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

On other end of crankshaft

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
No, have not had them off. Take them off?
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

No, what did you replace in the engine?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Replaced nothing in the engine, only stator coil and flywheel. Lower pulley is off
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

That would lock engine?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Don't understand your question
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

You replaced stator and flywheel and now engine is locked? Could stator bolts be too long?

Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

If you reinstall the flywheel bolt and washer in the crankshaft engine can't be turned?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Correct, can't turn it even with the flywheel and lower pulley off
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
stator bolts were OEM
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

I assume it was turning before?

Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

Are spark plugs in? Could there be fluid on top of the pistons, locking engine?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Spark plugs are in, not sure how to see if fluids are on top of the Pistons or not. Don't want to take the entire motor apart because I doubt I could put it back together. And it was working fine, wife mowed and said it died and started smoking. That's when it was blowing fuses. Then I hooked up with you and took the flywheel and coil off and you know as much as I do about the state of the engine
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

Just remove the spark plugs! If there is fluid on top of piston it will come out when engine turns.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
put the flywheel back on and remove the spark plugs, then try to start the engine?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Remember the engine is not currently turning with a wrench
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

NO<just remove the spark plugs and see it you can turn with wrench!

Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

Engine wasn't low on oil was it?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Oil level looks fine, and removed spark plugs and still can't get it to budge
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

I thought it was turning before you replaced stator???

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Didn't try to turn it before I replaced the stator so I don't know
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

Then I have to assume the engine has internal problem!

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Ok, that's terrible. Back to the Cub! Do I need to go back to that feed? I replaced the fuse, it starts. And checking the reservoir and hoses and fittings with a soapy spray does not reveal any obvious leakage. Where would I find the safety switch for the deck blade?
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

Leak would be suction/vacuum leak, would not show as external leak!

Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

blade would not have safety switch. Just the on/off switch.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
how to check? And the blade being engaged kills the motor immediately, ideas?
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

Check each hose connection, and clamp to see if they could be loose or damaged. And is the resovoir sealed, no leaks.

Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

On deck, is deck free or binding, or just safety switch killing engine? Safety switch is seat, brake, arms and pto switch.
