Customer Question

I have a Cub Cadet LT1024 that won't start. Cranks when you jump it but won't turn over. I replaced the PTO switch because it was staying engaged 100% on the time. Replaced the spark plugs now too. Previously I could start it with a jump but ever since I replaced the deck belt it will not start. Not sure if I caused this issue.

Is ignition fuse good?

Is ignition fuse good?

Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

Look in the starter solenoid area, behind engine.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I checked the fuse yesterday, it's still good.
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

Seat switch. brake switch, or pto switch will keep starter from engaging. Do you have voltage to the key switch?Do you hear fuel solenoid click when key is turned on

Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

Do you have voltmeter or test light to test for voltage?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Seat switch looks good, PTO switch was replaced. I haven't looked at the brake switch. Will need to get a voltmeter to check the voltage this afternoon. Will listen for the solenoid clicking then too.

OK, check to be sure the fuse has power past it.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Fuse has power past it. Key switch definitely has power because the lights come in. Just noticed the deck belt is moving when I try to start it so the new PTO switch didn't fix that. However when it's engaged it won't crank and when it's disengaged it will crank (even though the belts still moving) so it's not the safety.

Was old pto switch melted? Could be wires in the harness plug be touching? Maybe pto is still (on)

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Old PTO switch was not melted.
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

?? You say (when it's disengaged it will crank).???

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
it will crank when I jump it and PTO switch is in the off position. But never turns over. I think it won't ignite and I don't know why.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I still need to check the brake switch though. Don't know exactly what to look for.
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.
Does the fuel solenoid click when the key is turned on? It should open the fuel as soon as key is turned on. When you say jumped it. what are you doing, jumping the solenoid or using jumper cables at battery?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I don't know what the solenoid should sound like, but fuel is definitely getting to the engine. Jumping it from car battery to the mower battery with jumper cables. That used to work.
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

You may have a battery that is so bad, it won't jump through!

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
It was new, but I have jumped it many times.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
When I just took the deck belt off it cranked faster. Still didn't turn over though.
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

Check the fuel solenoid. Engine will not fire if it gets no fuel!

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Engine is definitely getting fuel. The spark plugs are wet with gas.
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

No spark!

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I believe it's not getting a spark but I don't know why.

Single kill wire from key switch to coils

Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

Nothing else should kill spark.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Cam anything else keep it from sparking initially? Other than a flooded engine.
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

Nothing else should kill spark.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
what do I need to look for?
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

Briggs twins, if they have spark and compression, and fuel can have pushrods off! Just a thought.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Ignition plug was a mess. Cleaned it with a wire brush and then could start the mower only if I turned the car on while jumping it. I think the PTO clutch will have to be replaced in order to finally be able to disengage it.
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

So if jumping with car, is the battery good?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I still have to jump every time. Ordered a PTO clutch and we will see if that fixes it.
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

OK, thanks,

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
PTO clutch replaced but now it won't crank. Sounds like the PTO switch safety.
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

So battery voltage is good?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Probably not, it was drained before the clutch was replaced. I am charging it overnight then jumping it to try again.
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

OK, let me know.
