Customer Question

My 48 inch, 23hp riding mower won't start. It doesn't even click. The battery checks 14 volts. It ran last week, but when I went to start it today -- nothing. It is a year and 3 months old. It has 101 hrs..

Welcome to JUST ANSWER small engines, let me try to help you !! Check the seat switch and harness, and be sure the pto is off. It sounds like a safety switch that is not closed for start.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I unhooked the seat switch but it didn't help. I switched the pto switch on and off several times. It clicks when I pull the knob.
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.
Unhooking the seat switch will not let it start! Try putting the wires together
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I jump wired it and still nothing.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I wasn't sure if the seat switch opened or closed the circuit so I tried it both ways. It could possibly be the break switch??
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Brake
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.
Yes, can be brake switch or wire harness to either of the switches.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
The wires look good, and the brake switch seems to be in position.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
It is still under waranty, and I could take it back to the dealer, but I would have to borrow a trailor, ane the deales is 50 miles from here.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Perhaps I should quit washing it sfter each use.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Mechanical problems are easy for me, but electrical is a whole different isdue.

Issue
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Only thing I can think of is the seat switch, the brake switch, or the ignition switch. Id there anything else?
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.
If you jump the starter solenoid, does the engine spin?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Havent tried that. Not sure if I know how.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Use one side of a jumper cable from plus side of battery to starter?
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.
No, just jump the cable terminal to the switch terminal on the solenoid!
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.
That would be the same connection the key makes!

Customer: replied 1 year ago.

Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
When I jump from the battery to the starter it spins.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I will go try. Be right back
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
When I jump acrosd the solenoid the startes spins, but the engine still won't start.
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.
Did you have the key on?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Almost has to be a kill switch.
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.
One of the safety switches! Looking at the wiring, I don't see any other switches.
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.
Do you hear the fuel solenoid in the carburetor click when you turn the key on?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
No
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I'm thinking it must be the brake switch, but I don't know how to check it.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
O well. It was worth $18 dollars to talk to you. I will just take it back to the dealer.
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.
