l have a JD LX178 with 2cyl. liquid cool engine. l smelled gas when mowing. l stopped and checked to find gas coming out the small hode on top of carb. how do l fix this

The needle valve and float in the carburetor is not shutting off the fuel. The needle may have debris under it,or the float may have fuel in it and not floating!

You will need to remove the float bowl.and check the needle and float.

The needle valve was the problem. Float was ok, worked good after cleaning.
To pass along some info, another problem l had with my 178, it used to vapor-lock on hot, humid days. I started using Premium gasoline, with 1oz. of octane booster per tank full. No problems since.
