My onan generator turns over has fuel will fire one time when start switch is released.

IT sounds like your starter switch may be bad internally. It is not allowing the ignition to fire until you release the switch. This tells me that the contacts inside the switch are messed up and not working properly. I would try replacing the switch with a new one. Thanks.

It works thru a solonid

Internally in the switch there are contact points that control the function of the switch, if these contacts are not separating properly when trying to start the machine the ignition could be grounded out until you release the switch. Everything has to go through the switch before getting to the solenoid, the only thing the solenoid does is amplify the amperage going to your starter.
