Customer Question

Hello, we have a pty9000 that was running well last weekend, until I had to stop for something and then it wouldn't start again. When you try to start it now, it makes a grinding noise and nothing else. Thanks for your help Lorrine

Engine model number? Can you see the starter to flywheel engagement? Is battery voltage above 12,5 volts?
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.
Starter gear may be stripped, or battery may be too low to start engine.

Hello, I found an engine model of 44M777. We can not see the flywheel engagement, The battery is at 12.74. My husband said it sounds like a coffee grinder. Lorrine

Briggs twin engine, if you remove the upper flywheel cover you can see the starter gear and flywheel. Sounds like the starter is bad.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.

So you think we need to order a new starter? If we take the cover off the engine, can we visually look at the starter, turn the key and know that it is bad?

Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.
Yes, take the cover off and you can see it!
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.
You will need to remove the cover anyway if you are going to replace it!
Customer: replied 1 year ago.

But how will we actually know that it bad? what should we look for?

Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.
You will see the missing teeth!
