Welcome to JUST ANSWER small engines, let me try to help you !! Engine runs ok after it starts? Do you have a voltmeter to test the battery voltage? Does engine spin easily if you remove the spark plugs?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.

Yes, the engine runs great ... if I can just get it started. I do not have a voltmeter to test the battery but I just recharged it and it's only 1 month old. Not sure what you mean by the engine spinning easily w/o the spark plug. Have not tried that.

It sounds like the compression release is not working.

What is the engine model number?
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.
The compression release is part of the camshaft gear on most engines.
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.
If you run a compression test, it may show the compression is too high!

If over 120 lbs, the compression release is not working.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.

I doubt I'm equipped to run a compression test. What would I need to do?

Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.
Compression gage, can be rented at most auto supplies.
