Welcome to JUST ANSWER small engines, let me try to help you !! Backfiring is typically a valve open when the spark occurs. The valves need to be checked, to see that they are set .004 and .006 inch, intake and exhaust. Also check the electric solenoid in the base of the carburetor. It has to stay open, or the engine will die.
