Customer Question

I have a Toro Timecutter ss 5000 I've had it just about 1 year. Today I had been cutting grass for about 2 1/2 hours and the engine stop like it was out of gas. I check the gas tank it was empty, I fill the tank. I climb aboard cut off the blades positioned the handles. The solenoid just clicks and wont turn over. I tried it again 3 hour later got the same issue.

Ranwell1 :

HI

Ranwell1 :

If the solenoid clicks several times, it means that the battery is low and needs to be charged for a minimum of 8 hours at 6 amps....or it might even be bad and need replaced. It also could mean that the battery cables may be corroded and may not be making full contact or a connection. You may need to clean the battery cables as well. If you decide to buy a new battery, DO NOT buy it at a Discount store as the do not usually have good batteries. You need a battery that has at least 300 to 350 cranking amps.

Ranwell1 :

If the solenoid only clicks once, you may have more problems.

Ranwell1 :

You may actually have a cylinder that is full of gas or oil that is causing what we call a hydrolock.

Ranwell1 :

If this is the case, you can find out if this is the problem by removing the spark plug and using the starter, turn the engine over. It will likely push gas or oil out of the spark plug hole.

Ranwell1 :

If it still does not turn over, then you may have a starter gear that is stuck in the flywheel and it may need to ge loosened. This is done by removing the engine cover and finding the top of the starter. The gear can be located at the top of the starter. You can also MAYBE loosen the gear by taking your hands and moving the engine BACKWARDS. This is much easier to do with the spark plugs out.

Ranwell1 :

If it still will not turn over, you may actually have an engine that is locked up.

Ranwell1 :

Check the engine oil and if it is low, you probably have a frozen engine that will likely need to be replaced. This is usually caused by a lack of oil.

Ranwell1 :

If you have gas or oil in your cylinder as described above. Then the cause is wither that someone put too much oil in it...or the carburetor is dirty and it is bypassing gas into the oil. If this is the case, the carburetor will need to be cleaned and rebuilt with a complete new carburetor repair kit that includes a new float needle and seat.

Ranwell1 :

LEt me know what yu find and I will be happy to help further if needed.

Ranwell1 :

Many of the issues that I mentioned will need to have a professional look at it to repair.
