Assuming this is what you are seeing, the gears are pressed on and have to be either driven off or pressed off. In the case of the front axle shaft you have to drive it out using the case as a holder since it has to come out to re-bush the axle. A wooden dowel block is recommended because the axles are very soft. If there is much wear where the seals ride you will need to replace it anyway or it will still leak in that case you can treat it a little rougher.
