Welcome to JUST ANSWER small engines, let me try to help you !! The Briggs engine only has a single kill wire on the magneto. It is killed by the key switch. From you description, I suspect your key switch is shorting out the kill wire in the start position. You could locate the magneto next to the flywheel and remove the kill wire to see if the unit will start and run, then check the kill wire back to the key switch for any shorts, and then check the key switch itself. But it sounds like the key switch. I assume it has the one piece plug that attaches to the key switch and not individual wires. Let me know. Thank you.

Okay so you think it is in the kill switch or the key switch all together. I did have a number of wires off the motor that had melted from all the years of wear and heat. I replaced that wiring harness as well.

What your telling me is that this is a seperate wire that leads to the motor around the flywheel, from the key switch that I need to take off the motor and see if the motor starts. If it does it isn't the key switch but just the kill wire shorting out somewhere?

If i get a new key switch it may not solve the problem is what you are saying also...correct?

The kill wire from the magneto needs to be checked, it can be shorted , or the harness can be on the wrong terminal on the key switch. Then, after eliminating the wiring, the key switch could be changed.
