John Deere 4100... run then die, replaced battery(was old) problem presisted, rebuild alternator needed cleaned up, one of the magnets came off and the bushings were worn. Now starts with a jump but still won't run. Keeps dying. Now theres smoke coming out from under the dash so tried to turn it off with the key, wouldn't shut off had to pull the cables... any thoughts?

sounds like you have a bad diode in the alternator, if its a generator unit, problem it may be a problem in the voltage regulator as well. to test this, completely remove the wires for the charging system from the starter solenoid, or the battery (whichever one they go to
then hook up your booster to the battery, crank and go, leaving the booster hooked to the battery. it should stay running provided you coil power wires are still hooked up.
