My John Deere riding lawn mower will not move forward or backward.

Customer Question

My John Deere riding lawn mower will not move forward or backward. It sounds like it is trying to engage but will not. Also it can easily be moved forward or backward when it is turned off, which is not normal.

Take the wheel off. The axle will have a key slot in it. The wheel will have a key slot in it. There will be a piece of key stock material that slides in there when the slots are lined up. Look wherever you took the wheel off and you should find the key stock.

What does this key stock look like
Expert:  J.R. replied 6 years ago.
It will just be a 4 to 6" long piece of metal. It will be about 1/4" square.
