The air gap the coil should have from the flywheel is .010 Set the gap inbetween the magnet and coil. You can use a business card if you don't have a feeler gage.

It is actually a LX 172 with a Kohler SC 420V engine

Thought it had the Kawasaki. Still the same process though. Slide a business card or .010 feeler gage in between the coil and flywheel magnet. Then tighten the coil.
