Customer Question

We have a 8 HP 24" YardMaster snowblower purchased about 4 years ago, Model 31AE6FEE503, Serial No. 1I234B30502002. Yesterday while blowing snow a stick got caught in the auger. The result was the auger housing broke and the threads on the gear shaft were stripped. We will need some parts and wonder if this is a repair we can do ourselves, or are special tools required? Where will we get the parts (we live in Saskatooon, Saskatchewan, Canada)? What would be the approximate cost for this repair?

From the MTD manual for 600 series blowers, it looks like these are the parts we need:

45 (NNN) NNN-NNNN RH Reduced Auger Housing
46 (NNN) NNN-NNNN LH Reduced Auger Housing
53 717-04126 Worm Shaft
50 Auger Housing components
684-04069, 711-04285, 790-00120, 618-04171, 731-04870

Thank you,
Brenda Weenk

I am working on your problem

I am trying to verify your part numbers.. I was at first confused that you included photo references for some of your part numbers and not others, but I am on the right track now to cost this out for you..

I have found a source of parts (I think)..

Just a few minutes..

OK, now for the bad news.

These are the current part numbers as best as I can get the cross referenced.

Do not order them until you are 100% sure.

These prices are US dollars and it does not include shipping to Canada even though it quotes a shipping price.

You can order them from any MTD dealer even one locally to you..

YES, you are looking at $558 in parts (US) alone not including any labor to pay someone to fix it.

There are 4 dealers in your town where you can order these parts.

They are authorized service dealers..

Understand, I am not suggesting that you order them, because it may be new snow thrower time. But, I wanted to answer all your questions first..

In order to help keep your equipment in top operating condition, MTD has over 1200 Authorized Service Centres across Canada.

Here is the MTD website for Canada. It may help you.

About the prices of the parts. Please do not kill the messenger..

I am not an MTD employee rather I am an independent Expert consultant for justanswers.com

We do the research and report. I do not get paid off of your purchase of parts, rather Only when you hit ACCEPT with your answer.

If you have further questions, please reply and I will be glad to follow up.

Expert Robert1532 reports:

"I went to my MTD disc , looked up your model and looked at breakdown . I beleive you only need # XXXXX assy , everything else is just the breakdown of the complete assy .And you might need the scraper plate if it's worn ".

I think he is on the right track here..

But a little over simplified..

If you look at parts breakdown again, you see a reference 25 in a circle.

That is the one that he speaks of that points to the gearbox assembly.

It is hard to tell if it includes the part ref 53 or not(NNN) NNN-NNNNbut I think it may.

But it would not have ref 50 which is 711-04285 the 24" auger axle. because they are different with width of unit.

And still need

Auger Housing components 684-04069, 790-00120, and 731-04870

I will come up with a new list here shortly with prices..

Here is the new parts list with prices.

Robert did help us save you about $90 with his good eye.

But you still have a decision to make.

Make sure you take your model numbers and serial numbers with you as some part numbers may have changed because they were superceded.

All prices I gave were US Dollar Pirices.

If I was going to spend this much money on parts, I would take the whole unit to a dealer and make sure I was ordering the exact correct part and also not ordering something I could do without.

ALSO, the dealer might make you an exchange price for the whole unit that looks attractive to you..

Could end up with a new unit for not too much more money.
