Customer Question

I have a very old Magneto testing bench. The name on it is Jos. Weidenhoff, Inc.. It was made by a company in Chicago, Il. I would like to find a operators manual, and any other info that can be found for it, i.e. how to repair the machine itself. There is no model number on it or serial number that I can find.

Already Tried:
I think it can also be used for testing starters, but am not certain about that.

Dear Mr Home Smithy,

A better group of folks to ask about the magneto test bench might old tractor or motorcycle or even airplane mechanics. My spelling isn't to good. But anyhow the magnetos were more widely used on farm tractors from the early 1900's to about 1955 or there abouts and on motorcycles, such as BMW's until 1970. They are still used on many bikes today. With the interest in restoring these antique machines I am trying to aquire and get some of this old testing equipment going as I do magneto repair.

Thanks,

Gene

Ok just to confirm. Is this the unit you have?

Customer replied 1518 days and 1 hours ago.

Mr. Home Smithy,

You are in the right field and would like to have info the unit pictured in the event that I run accross one. The one that I have is direct drive. The motor or drive mecanmism is on the left and the armature is turned 90 degrees from the one you pictured. On the exteme left of the drive motor sections of the motor housing can be opened up, no tools required. On the right hand end of the motor is bevel gear with a short space between it and another device that you can attach various adaptors for either magnetos or possibly starters, etc. It is a bench model and the switch is on the left front of the unit. On the back of the unit is a number of meters and switches. If I can I will take a picture of it an get it to you, if my wife will help, as that process is beyond my computor ability.

Thanks,

Gene

ok I saw that unit also during my searching. If you could get the pictures on your computer here is how to upload them to our servers. If anything I am sure that I can help you figure out how the unit operates. The design is fairly simple electronicly. It would definatly be better ifI can locate the users manual of course.

Ok here is how you upload them-

At the top of your reply box is a icon that looks like a tree. It is two to the right of the smiley.

Click on the icon. It will bring up a box.

Click on browse. Another box will appear.

Click on browse again in that box.

Navigate to the place in your computer where the picture is. Select it, and then in the second box click on upload.

The second box will disapear.

In the first box click on insert.

This will upload your picture, and you should see it displayed in your reply box.

Repeat the process to upload another picture.

Post the direct links here. Do not use the forum codes or the html. Just the plain url.

Mr Smithy,

My wife has given up on trying to get the pictures to you. She did find a picture of the unit and it says that the unit is a 1946 model. So may-be if you could show me a picture of the one you think it is, may-be we could get to the unit that way.

Thanks again for your efforts.

Dear Mr. Smithy,

O E-Bay there is a UNCLE-UGLYS trading company. He had advertising leaflets showing the unit that I have. May-be you could go there or if there is an address that I could send the pictures to you by the good old US-Mail.

Thanks again,

Ok I have added a few notes to your pictures. In the second one if you could tell me what each number is XXXXX what is written there I should be able to draw you a fairly accurate schematic for the unit, as well as provide some hook up instructions for the cabeling.

If you could provide a picture or two of the back of the unit it would be very helpfull doing the schematic for you.

Hello Mr. Smithy,

Just sent you a new batch of pictures, or should say my wife did. I think that if you zoom in on them you can most likely read what's on the guages and switchs. If you can't let me know and do my best to get you a diagram of them and what they say.

Thanks for your efforts!!!!!!!

LOL ok. Tell the wife thank you for her help. She has made a difficult task much easier for us both.

Ok the pics are a great help. I need a couple things clairified please.

The field rheostat. What does it say after "adjusts"?

At the bottom right are the leads. What is the one furthest to the left designated as?

Ok I have to go to SLC, Utah on Thursday to handle my fathers affairs. He is in the hospital at the moment and they are uncertain of his long term prognosis. He had his noodle worked on and it really messed him up. But he is getting better they say.

Sooooo I will be taking the pics along on my (antique) laptop to work on the diagrams. I am not sure if my Uncle Bob has internet access or not. If he does it is probably (cringeYell) "dial up". But I will stay in touch as I will probably have more picture requests to ask of you.

Best, THS

Customer replied 1507 days and 14 hours ago.

Hello Smithy,

Hope your father is doing O'k.

Just above the Field Rheostat is a fuse, below the rheostat it says, Adjust Field Current? It is pretty faint!
Then the leads at the bottom right are from left to right, Battery, Field, Ground, Voltmeter.

Good luck on your trip. Be careful.

Ok Im back and working on the schematic. Once I have it done I will see what I can do about writing up an instruction manual. I should have the schematic done by tomorrow.

Dad is doing good, all considered. It will be a long road back to where he was before all this happened. In the short time I was there he made some pretty remarkable steps forward. Just seeing him open his eyes and say my name was very inspiring, as well as emotional. HA! who says grown men dont cry!

Hi Gene;

Im still working on your schematic and I think I have this thing figured out. I still need to see some clearer pictures of the gearing. I am having trouble envisioning how the degree wheel on the face of the right side of the unit is supposed to work. I have also located the origonal patent for the unit. Of course the darn thing is written in legalese instead of mechanical terms that we would understand lol.

I may also have a guy that rebuilds magnetos thst may be able to help fill in some of the blanks as far as developing a users manual goes. I should hear back from him in the next couple days.

Dad is doing good still. I spoke with his charge nurse and he is getting better each day. Some days he gets lazy acording to her, but shes a "mean old b***h" (her own words not mine lol), and she stays on his butt till he gets the days chore done or mastered. She is using playing cards as his reward. She says he likes to play dealer Spreads the pack all over the bed but cant pick them up yet. He then goes to sleep with a big grin on his face.

I'll post the schematic tonight for sure. At least all that I have so far. I think you will like it.

Best, Smitty

Hello Mr. Smithy,

If you sent me schematic or some kind of manual to explain how the thing works, the legaleze patent info, I haven't received it. I know this has been a challenge. We have had power surges and such and may-be it got lost that way. Anyhow I didn't get your info.

Hi Gene;

Please accept my deepest appologies for leaving you hanging like I did. Rest assured it was very unintended.

What had happened was I recieved a most kind invitation to the local policemans ball and I just couldnt resist. Seems that the more I tried to tell them I was unable to attend the more they insisted. They even provided me with some very nice jewlery.

I had attended a previous ball some time ago. This placed me on their special list of attendees. Once you are on that list you need permission to leave the state. If you leave the state without their permission they issue a personal invitation for you to attend the next ball. When I went to see my father I forgot about this fact. They didn't. =/

During my absence I recieved a reply to an enquiry from a gentleman that had an origonal copy of the operating instructions for your unit.

I have uploaded the pictures to my Rapidshare account. Please click here for the download. Due to JA security I had to rename the file to a .txt extension. Please rename the file from Testerpics.txt to Testerpics.exe. It is a WinRar self extracting .exe file, and is not malicious at all. Just download and click on the file, It will prompt you for a location to extract the pictures to.

Again I am truly sorry for leaving you like I did. Im sure you can understand why it was unavoidable.

Best regards, XXXXX XXXXX Smithy

Hello Mr. Smithy,

I'm quite pleased that you had't forgot about my request. And am very familiar about the long memory of the state law enforcement folks. I have a son who has to watch over his shoulder when he comes to visit, even though it would only cost him $ 1300.00 to clear the problem up.
Anyhow, I have tried to download the info without success in every way I can think of. I am nottttt the most noligable computor person by any stretch of the imagination. What I am wondering is if you would be so kind as to put this info on a disc and send it to me. I'd be more than happy to pay you any extra expense involved for this service. Two copies would be better as my computor is old and might decid to eat one.

I 'd be very grateful for your efforts!!!!!!!!!

Hope all is well with you and your family.
Take care,

Gene

Thank you for understanding, Gene. And yes my family is doing great. Especially mmy father. The doctors said his recovery is amazing. He is actually playing bridge again...and winning!

I have uploaded the pages in .jpg format to our servers here at JA. Please let me know if they are readable on your end. If they are not I can set my wife to transcribing them into a text document. (shes already working on it )

I will contact a moderator and see if I can arrange to have a hard copy sent to you. I have much more information about this type of machine. Everything from a little text someone sent me to the origonal patents and even a patent that was never produced. I think you will find this information to be very interesting if anything. You will also be able to see why I was so confused with it all.

Dear Mr. Home Smithy,

I am prety sure the moderators will allow you to put it on a disc and send it to me as this has been done by Kawasaki Doug on another project. All of this other info you speak of sounds like goood information and one can seldom have too much of info!

The pages you have uploaded on Jp are barely legible, therefore are of little use to me. Sorry about that!!! If we can't work out something with your moderators let me know as I don't want your time to have been wasted and I'll gladly pay you for your trouble.

Thank you and hope you have a good week-end!!!!
