I have the Honda HRX217 self propelled mower. The drive belt

Customer Question

I have the Honda HRX217 self propelled mower. The drive belt keeps slipping off. The first time I took it back to the Honda dealer to have it put back on, while it was under warranty. Now, I would like to fix this myself, as it's bound to happen again. When I flip the mower on it's right side, I can see the belt off the transmission pulley on the rear wheel. But how do I get to this belt to put it back on the pullley? There is not enough clearance to reach my hands in there. Something has to be removed, what what. This mower has the plastic deck and I don't see may bolts to remove some covers. Thanks for any help.

I beleive on that model there is a cover in the back (where the catcher bag would mount) that can be removed for access. Hope this helps, if not let me know!

Hello JD, I'll have to go out to the storage shed and take a good look at the back of the mower to see if I can spot the cover you mention and fasteners/screws/bolts to remove it. That would indeed allow access to the belt. If I can remove the cover, I will accept your answer. Thanks for responding.

Sounds good! let me know how it goes..

I took a good look at the back of mower, under the flip-down cover where the bag goes. There is no access panel. The entire deck seems to be one molded piece of heavy plastic that runs from front to back. I cannot see where there would be access to belt. I've never seen anything so protected as this. Leave it to Honda, I guess.

Let me know if a photo of the back of the mower would be helpful and whether this is allowed on "Just Answers." Thanks for your help.

Sorry about that! Well, I believe I may be around a similair Honda mower today, I'll take a look at it... Meanwhile, perhaps another expert might jump in with your answer! Thanks for your patience.

SorryCustomer You're right, I looked at a HRX217 today. I was thinking of it's predecessor which had access in the rear. What a pain! It's nice to have a deck that won't corrode though eh? Anyways, another mechanic at my day job claims he has fished belts onto these things before using some offse needle nose pliers but I'm going to see if I can determine the proper procedure...

I apologize for all the delay, I have the info you requested if it's not too late. To gain access to belt: Remove lawnmower blade(s). Next, there are a few bolts to remove around the blade housing which will drop the ring/cover out of your way...

So how does this work? How do I see the entire answer to the HRX217. It cuts off at the "cover out of your way."

Customer replied 1673 days and 23 hours ago.

Well, maybe that was the end of your sentence. I'll give this procedure a shot tomorrow. Thanks for your help.

Sorry, I only had time to inspect the machine and talk to our other mechanic, after removing those bolts, you should have enough room to inspect and replace the belt. Let me know how this works. Again, I appreciate your patience with me. I thought I new a simple answer when we started this thing but to be honest, my company stopped buying these mowers and I hadn't touched one in awhile. We still have one in our down pile (major engine failure) that I have taken a look at now, if only for a moment. If it's any consolation, I have been working real hard to get you an answer that you are happy with and I think you'll see what I mean when you look at the mower. Talk to you soon! Thanks - JD
