Good morning! My mom got Roomba # XXXXX in

Customer Question

Good morning! My mom got Roomba # XXXXX in June, 2008.
Now when we try to charge it the orange light flashes slowly, but after a few minutes, we get Err5. (Charging error 5). I have tried the reset several times, but still get the Err5 after attempting a recharge.

Any ideas? Thank you. Chuck

error 5 shows your having problem with the wheels not moving as they should ,,

  1. Check the side wheels for obstructions.
  2. Push the wheels up and down several times and shake out any loose debris that may be trapped in the wheel well.
  3. Briskly turn both wheels by hand and make sure they turn freely and that each wheel exhibits the same amount of resistance. If a wheel cannot be turned by hand, place the Roomba on the floor and manually push Roomba a foot backwards and a foot forwards.
  4. If compressed air is available, generously blow air into the wheel well.
  5. If error persists on flat surfaces when there are no obstacles present, click here to contact iRobot Customer Support.

Dear XXXXX,

I can read the manual! You didn't even read my question. I said I had a charging Err 5, not a runtime Error 5. Yes, I have tried the reset as the manual suggests, and that did not help. That is why I tried asking an expert, someone who could go beyond the manua.

Check the output dc voltage of your Power Supply Unit. It should measure 22.5 volts. How are you charging your Roomba? Do you use a homebase? If you use a homebase, disconnect it and try charging by connecting the PSU directly into the charging jack on the side of the Roomba.

The charging err 5 is difficult to narrow down. Without a voltmeter you cannot verify the power supply is presenting the correct voltage to the Roomba. So at this point you could possibly have a defective PSU or a failed charging system component on the PCB or the battery is marginal/defective.

Checking the charger output is more like an answer I was looking for, but not worth $28.
