Week 1Professional Resources
i) Effective teachers often have an arsenal ofresources readily available. The purpose of this assignment is to beginbuilding a personal arsenal by finding and reviewing several options.
ii) In a essay, locate fourdifferent resources and describe them in great detail (e.g., who/what it is,its purpose, history of the resource). Then, draw explicit connections betweenthe resource and how it can assist you in your teaching, decision making, andprofessional development.
iii) Be creative. You may locate any resourcethat you think is a viable option. The resources should come from three of thefollowing sources:
(1) Professional journals
(2) A professional in the field
(3) An organization
(4) A book or series of books for professionaldevelopment
(5) Certification
(6) Internships
(7) Volunteering
Week 2
Development and Diversity
i) In a essay select onedevelopmental theory (e.g. humanist, behaviorist).
(1) Explain, in detail, the components of thistheory and major contributors to this theory and what they have contributed.
(2) Within a classroom setting, how doeducators use this theory to their advantage? What are some drawbacks to thistheory within the classroom setting?
(3) Create a lesson plan or activity thatemploys some aspect of your chosen theory, and explain the connection (e.g.,How do behaviorist ideologies manifest themselves in an activity that testspersonal space and comfort zones?).
Week 3
Accommodating Differences
i) First, identify three prospective groups ofindividuals that can contribute to a class of students. These can be groupsidentified by culture, learning style, special ability, etc. Be creative. Writea essay addressing the following topics:
(1) While not everyone within any group willexhibit the same qualities, what are some common characteristics of the group?
(2) What are some special challenges that aneducator may have to overcome to accommodate this group?
(3) What special learning opportunities can beoffered by such a group represented in class?
(4) Finally, outline very specifically two orthree ways an educator can accommodate each difference using either ateaching method, a specific lesson plan, employing particular resources, etc.Again, be creative. Justify your accommodations by referencing your coursereadings and any other resources you find to support your decisions.
Week 4
Learning Perspectives Paper
i) In 250-500 words, define three differentlearning perspectives.
ii) In an additional 250-500 words, explain whatthe perspectives look like in a classroom setting.
iii) Provide three different lesson plans withone activity that addresses each perspective that you provided in your paper.
Week 5
Compare and Contrast Chart and Paper
i) Using a table chart, compare and contrastMaslow's hierarchy of needs theory with Skinner's behaviorist theory byaddressing the following:
(1) How motivation is defined.
(2) How motivation changes for elementaryversus secondary students.
(3) How the theories are similar and/ordifferent.
(4) List at minimum three ways that each can beapplied in the classroom.
ii) The chart should encompass the body of thepaper. Be sure to include an introduction, a conclusion, and a References sectionfor citations to support your chart.
Week 6
Psychological Underpinnings: A Task at Hand(Benchmark Assignment)
i) Review the psychological and cognitivetheories presented throughout the course. Conduct a task analysis for two ofthe following tasks. Choose one of the following from the Physical Tasks listand one from the Academic Tasks list. In order to correctly task-analyze theprocedures below, the student should perform the task and document each individualstep using specific details.
(1) Physical Tasks
(a) Tying a shoe.
(b) Jumping rope.
(2) Academic Tasks.
(a) Solving a two-digit addition math problem.
(b) Decoding the word dog.
ii) Using the task analysis breakdown from theabove categories, create lesson plans that clearly outline the step-by-stepprocedures for each task selected. The lesson plans should each contain thefollowing components at a minimum:
(1) Objective (the academic objective needs tobe directly connected to state academic standards, but the physical objectivedoes not).
(2) Materials needed to teach the lesson.
(3) Clear step-by-step directions/procedures.
(4) An assessment of learning that is clearlydescribed.
iii) Using the lesson plan created, teach theabove two tasks to a younger family member or child of a friend and comparewhich was easier for the child to learn. Create a table that compares the twolessons.
iv) Write a 1250-1500-word essay explaining thefollowing:
(1) The psychological/cognitive theoristsrelating to the task analysis (support all of your claims and observations withsolid references and details).
(2) The task analysis process, its pros/cons,and how you used it for each step of this activity,
(3) Your observations of the effectiveness ofyour lesson plan as it relates to the success (or failure) of the lesson withthe learner(s).
(4) Three self-suggestions for improving theprocess.
Week 7
Collaborative Learning Community: Classroom Management Plan
a) In a essay, consider thefollowing case study:
i) Johnny is a fifth grade student who has ahistory of misbehavior in the classroom based on his prior records. It is thestart of the school year and you have spoken with the school counselor aboutproviding Johnny with a positive learning plan that will increase hisproductivity in the classroom.
ii) As a group, identify a particularmisbehavior and grade level for Johnny.
iii) Working together, create a classroommanagement plan that addresses the following, taking Johnny's behavior intoconsideration:
(1) Quality use of time and transition betweenactivities.
(2) Engaging activities.
(3) The use of routines and predictableschedules.
(4) Appropriate use of rewards in theclassroom.
(5) Success on task and ability level.
iv) Then provide examples of how you willaddress Johnny's needs individually while still addressing the needs of therest of the students in the same classroom.
v) Identify four Web site resources that willsupport your plan for helping Johnny adapt his behavior.
