1. Socrates and Plato criticized the Sophists for the use of rhetoric, but they obviously employed rhetoric in their arguments as well. The Apology, after all, is a masterful use of rhetoric. The real difference between Socrates and the Sophists must lie somewhere else. Ultimately, it must have to do with how they define truth. How does Socrates view truth, and how does that view differ from the Sophists view of truth?

1. In chapter 4, Jean-Paul Sartre says that absolute freedom means absolute responsibility. He says that when we choose our actions we are choosing for all of humanity. What does he mean by this? How does this compare to the claims of Williams James?

1. Plato claimed the ideal world is more real than the material world (what most of us call "the real world"). Aristotle said the ideal world is derived from the material world, so the material world is the only real world. Descartes divided the world in to Mind (ideal) and Body (material). What does Descartes's meditation on a piece of wax tell us about his view of what is real in the ideal and material worlds? (See pages 225-226 in your textbook).
