Earlier this year in Yacolt, Washington at The Larch Corrections
Center, a new program involving inmates and believe it or not...cats
was implemented. The correctional center has teamed up with an
organization based in Vancouver named Cuddly Catz which rescues stray
cats. The goal of Cuddly Catz is to get the cats ready for adoption.
Thus, the organization utilizes the inmates at the correctional center
to train the cats. The inmates are carefully screened before being
paired with a cat. They cannot have a violent history toward animals
or people. They also must have demonstrated good behavior at the
correctional center. The inmates are allowed to live two inmates to a
room with the cat instead of a regular dormitory. The inmate must keep
a journal on the cat's progress to see if the cat is ready for a new
home. The inmate also must also feed the cat. The supplies like food
and cat litter are fortunately donated by local businesses and
organizations. Fortunately, pairing cats and inmates has great success
and positive results. The inmates feel a great sense of pride of
socializing and training the cats. They realize that they are giving
back to the community as well because these cats will ultimately be
placed in people's homes. The program also teaches the inmates a lot
about patience and tolerance. Both the cats and the inmates have
previously had a rough history but their time together is priceless.
