98 Saturn SL2, stuck in forward gear, I removed the valve

Customer Question

98 Saturn SL2, stuck in forward gear, I removed the valve body and neither the drum nor any gears move do I need to remove and rebuild the transmission?
JA: How old is the transmission? Have you checked the brake switch?
Customer: No, where is that?
JA: Are you fixing your 98 yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: I am fixing it myself, as I said I have removed the valve body and neither the drum nor any gears move in any shifter position
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: The fluid was bad and I have replaced it and the filter.

What did the fluid look like in the bottom of the pan? Did the fluid have a strong burnt smell?
