We have a saturn vue 2005 and in July 2011, while towing it with our motorhome, the car started smoking. We stopped immediately and found that the gears had been engaged. There was a small fire in the engine. Called the tow truck and it was towed to a GM dealer close by. The transmission was replaced and the engine too. Cables were replaced and so forth. We kept getting calls from the dealer as to the progress, then something went wrong and the car would not run. They brought a mechanic in from Houston and after 3 or 4 days he found a mis-connection and all was well. We picked up the car, towed and drove it around every day and all was well. When we got back to California, the car would sit for a day or two then the problems started. If we don't drive the car every day, for long periods, the battery will die. The battery has been replaced twice, the alternator is fine. We are at our wits end, what is going on? No lights seem to be on at night, the car runs great when charged. As you know in order to tow this car, we have to pull out one of the fuses, could it be that over the years this fuse connection is damaged? Please help us figure out this mistery.

I understand checking for current drain by pulling fuses one by one but if the battery is disconnected, where is current coming from? Are you sure the battery must be disconnected?
when you install the amp meter you install it in series with the battery cable and battery
the current will flow through your meter and the battery will be connected through the meter
just be aware that you have to devise a setud where it will allow you to attach the meter and walk away because the car needs to sit for 20 minutes after you remove the ignition key for the body computer to go to sleep
then you start pulling fuses until any draw above .025a goes away
thats 25 milliamps
max
read this
they even call out a special tool there that helps hook up the meter
its the kent more J 38758
see that tool here
good luck
