I have a 1992 Saturn SL1 and am replacing the starter. I can get under the vehicle and have removed the bottom bolt, but how do I get to the top bolt to remove it?

  • Disconnect battery ground cable.
  • Remove air inlet tube and fresh air hose,
  • Remove upper starter attaching bolt through access hole near intake manifold support bracket.
  • Raise and support vehicle.
  • Using suitable pliers, remove starter shield pin, then lift shield upward to release from solenoid.
  • Disconnect starter electrical connectors and position aside.
  • Remove lower starter attaching bolt.
  • Remove rear starter support bracket attaching bolt.
  • Rotate starter until bracket clears axle shaft support bracket, pull rearward toward lefthand side of vehicle to remove.
  • Reverse procedure to install. Torque starter attaching bolts to 26 ft. lbs., starter bracket bolts to 22 ft. lbs. and starter solenoid terminal to 3 ft. lbs.
