Hello, my name is***** code is related to the ECM power relay so I'd start by replacing that relay, checking pins for being wet and after that you will need to check wiring going to the relay. Let me know if you have more questions or if there is anything else I can do to help. Thanks.

Which of the relays under the hood fuse box is the correct one?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Which number? R#
Expert:  Dan replied 1 year ago.

It is located in fuse box that is located in front of battery, it is labeled "engine control system main relay". Let me know, thanks.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
They are labeled R4 R 3 and R2
Expert:  Dan replied 1 year ago.

There should be a diagram somewhere on cover with relay label.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Nope just " F" for fuses and "R" for relays
Expert:  Dan replied 1 year ago.

I found diagram, here it is.

The last email with the diagram ends up at a dead end....I did locate the relay off an internet diagram put a new $13 relay in and now have a PO 686 code instead of a PO 687
Expert:  Dan replied 1 year ago.

This means voltage is low, other diagram meant voltage was high. I think it is possible new relay is problem, see if parts store will swap it out with another one. Let me know, thanks.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Tried 5 relays in that spot.
2 new ones, a verified good one.
And swapped the two next to each other.
No difference.

Still keep getting the P0686 code? Next step will be testing wiring.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Checked all the wiring in the circuit.
Neighbor is an electrician.
I was trying to clean this car up to get the best trade in value.
I would keep it, but parts are getting harder to find.
Took it in anyway.
They gave me $500 less than I was hoping to get, which was fine.
The wife has a new car and my problem is someone else's.
Didn't solve the problem, but you were very helpful.
Those harness wires looked kind of light gauge and I could see one of them being broken with intermittent connection because they tested OK.

I had to replace the throttle / gas peddle wiring by the throttle body because of a loss of communication between the two last year....I bet I couldn't even get that part anymore...
Thanks for your help.....too bad Saab is done and no more support, that was our third one, we liked them.

Good to hear they only took off $500, that seems reasonable. In the future make sure to never pressure wash an engine again. If anything, use a wet rag and wipe off the engine. Let me know if you run into more questions, thanks.
