I have a 1997 Saab 9000 CSE turbo which has just developed a fault with poor acceleration, the engine is responsive to the pedal & revs well but the power does not seem to get to the wheels resulting in a dangerously low take off speed. It kicks in eventually after a few seconds. The vehicle is well looked after & had a full service a few months ago

Hello and thanks for using Just Answer, any check engine light? Is car standard/automatic trans? Does it idle ok when stopped?

Hi, Its a manual and up to this weekend was running perfectly, there are no warning lights on apart from the airbag warning which has been on for over a year. engine idles fine & drives well after initial acceleration issue has been overcome.
So when you take off, if you accelerate hard, the car barely gets going? Where are the engine RPM's pretty high? Do you have ALL 5 gears? At the moment what I'm thinking is a slipping/and or malfunction clutch OR a worn shift bushing, maybe you think your taking off in 1st gear, but your actually taking off in 3rd. If none of this applies, what exact do you feel from the engine taking off from a dead stop?
Hi,
Car moves off well at low speed with correct use of gears 1, 2 , 3 , 4 & 5 all functioning well. Problem is quick acceleration as needed at busy roundabouts etc. Engine revs well in response to pedal but power does not seem to get to wheels. Engine idles well & gives good fuel efficiency - currently 33 mpg after a long drive this weekend.
I would check the wastegate arm off the turbo and see if it popped off. If it did, you'll have no boost which can cause issue you desribe. Here's a pic of one, let me know what you find. Good luck, hope this helps, if it does PLEASE hit ACCEPT.
Hi, thanks for that, The vehicle will be in the garage in the next couple of days, I'll let you know how we get on.
