I am looking at a 1999 9-3 SE 5 speed, which the dealer says needs a back up light switch and a neutral safety switch. My research shows that a 5 speed does not have a neutral safety switch, that it only has to do with an automatic. I also see that is an expensive part.Any ideas?

Hi,how are you? The neutral safety switch on a 5 speed is also known as a clutch assist switch. The neutral safety switch is located under the clutch on all vehicles that have manual transmissions. The are designed to prevent the car from being started while still in gear. Some models are adjustable and can be tightened or loosened to make them work. Others must be replaced as a unit. This is a expensive part, symptoms of the switch being faulty are a no start condition.
