Customer Question

I have a onan 5500 generator in my toy hauler. Doing my usual 30min runtime per month today and I got a error code 37. I read a previous post about moving the spring on the saw tooth arm. Does it matter which way I go. Any help would be great, as the closest servicing dealer is 2 hours away. Thanks, Jake.

Hi I'm Wayne

I will help you with this

that is the governor lever, with the spring,

it may be stretched and not enough tension

you want to make it stronger more tension on spring, shorting it

I hope this helped you

Originally I was receiving error code 37. After doing like you said and shortening the governor arm spring the generator still won't run, but instead of the 37 error, now I'm getting error code 14. I can keep the generator running perfectly fine as long as I manually control the throttle. Thanks.

Hi

thank you for that

In Many cases the codes comes up if the drive belt is slipping

due to a frozen idler pulley , this will cause the HTZ and the RPM not to match

OK thanks. Is there away to free up the frozen idler pully? The governor arm itself did seem a little stiff. Would that indicate a frozen idler pully? After running the generator for a few minutes by manually controlling the throttle the governor arm seems to be moving much more freely. Is there away I can check the drive belt? Like I said, I'm a long way from a dealer. Thanks.

Hi

Thank you for that

the arm it self , will free up

the idler pulley , should be able to turn free spin

if it does not , need to replace it , no fixing it

Hope this helped you

Thanks. When you say free spin turn itself, do you mean the governor arm should move up and down in a full range of motion freely by itself? It is doing that now, but still seems to be over revving, then shutting down if I don't manually control the throttle.
Expert:  Wayne replied 1 year ago.

Hi

No, The idler pulley for the belt

it should spin free, no binding

or it throws the RPM off

Wayne you've been a great help, one last question. Is there a way to check that it's turning freely, short of tearing it apart? Thanks again.
Expert:  Wayne replied 1 year ago.

Hi

Not really,

needs to be removed from Cabinet, sides removed

and then check it

Wished there is a better way, but you know RV limited space
