Customer Question

1985 Winnebago chieftain 31 foot. I released the parking brake handle which is to the left of driver seat on the floor and I don't think the cable retracts. The brakes appear to be dragging. The motorhome moves but it feels like the brakes are dragging. The parking brake has been on and the mhome has been parked for three years. How do I fix this? I am driving in to a mechanic tomorrow for some gas tank work. Is it safe to drive like this? Can I unstick the parking brake myself before i drive it in? Where is the brake fluid reservoir on this? I am very handy. It is a class a mhome Chevy 454 engine.

Optional Information:
Year: 1985
Make (other): Winnebago
Model: Chieftain
Engine: Chevy 454

Already Tried:
I've driven the RV a few miles. In reverse and forward. It moved but felt like it was dragging, especially in reverse. . I tried to find the brake fluid reservoir to see if it was full. I could not locate it. I crawled under the RV to find the parking brake cable to see where it entered the rear wheels and try to unstick it. (like I used to do with my Toyota motorhome). I could not find the parking brake cable.

Hello , my name is Joe

Look for the park brake drum and cable on the tailshaft end of the transmission.
You have the right idea , try to loosen the cable with a little force.
If the cable is seized bad enough , you may need to disconnect the cable or cut it to release the park brake.
If you have enough time , try soaking the cable and linkage with penetrating oil.

The brake master cylinder is located under the drivers platform. There is an access opening in the inner left front wheel well , but it can still be difficult to access.
