Hi my power steering stopped working today, just came up with steering fault on the display, and the car was virtually undriveable, I managed to get home , an hour later i went back to move it and everything is working fine again..I have driven the car for a few miles and all is well, but obviously there is a fault that needs fixing. would have thought it was mechanical but now wonder if its electrical ?The car is a 2002 model renault megane 1.9 turbo diesel dynamique..
Hi..
Hopefully i can help..
The Megane will use "electric power assisted steering"..this is all controlled by a combination of a control module/ecu.various angle/position sensors which allow the electric motor "on column" to position the wheels in either direction to which ever direction the steering wheel is turned..if the steering fault has flagged up on the dash and there is no effort at all then it could well be a fualt with either of the above or wiring/loose multiplug, connection / low battery or loose terminals but if the car seems to start up well and the charging system is full working order then i can't see it being that causing the problem / also check related fuses too just to be sure they are still intact "engine compartment eps fuses 70 amp & passenger compartment fuse 5 amp"
..but if in any event the fualt message does appear then i afraid it has to be further verified or investigated further on a suitable diagnostic machine / usually upto Dealer level or specific Renault clip machine first just to be sure exactly of the fault codes usually start off with DF??? before any replacement work is carried out if need be any good garage or independent specialist should have the machine if you prefer to avoid the dealer.. If if indeed the electric power steering column is becoming faulty or is at fault or fails completely then there are few companys out there that can recondition or supply http://www.ecutesting.com/catalogue/renault_eculist.html?category=4066&model=454
