Hello, I have friends living about an hour away who I knew in college
then was separated from for about ten years except Christmas cards,
then about twenty years with very little if any interaction and two
years ago saw the couple (married)at a meeting and then this year
we have been emailing back and forth about every two weeks. I was
thinking how to (not sure of the right word) reinforce or strengthen the
relationship, what can I say, so they are good friends, I was thinking if
I had to depend on them for something, right now it's out to dinner or
we will get together again some time, but how to get it to, anything I
can do? Mainly they have kids and I thought about how to living with
or near them as I get old...you know, I have others who will help but
something could happen which may change that...what to ask or say?

Hi, The best thing you can do to get the relationship where you want to be is to do your part. There is nothing you would need to ask them. What you need to do is be there for them and treat them the way that you want to be treated. Let them know how good and special they are. Invite them to spend time with you and be there for them. Show them that they can depend on you. Good deeds will always be reciprocated. When people are special to us we need to show them this through our own actions and if they feel the same they will surely continue.

I thought about asking them a question, maybe about future plans and what to say?
