Initially and if cleaning was not corrective, then it would point to an internal hardware issue or more particularly a weakening optical pickup (laser reader).
Are you then considering a DIY (do-it-yourself) repair approach? If yes, do you have access to and familiar with a multi-meter (and even perhaps a soldering iron)?
Not necessarily. In most instances, the Sony would still be able to play certain discs; original/commercially bought, certain recorded discs such as DVD -R but not +R or the other way around, not much with RWs.
BUT interestingly, can still play almost all CDs.
