I do not see any requirement that you use an attorney though it is advisable so you do not make any mistakes.

Is filing a lawsuit such as perfecting a lien considered practice law? I know from previous experience I could not defend my LLC in court without a lawyer.

You can represent pro se. It is always risky but allowable.
