You must give notice of the same number of days as between your rent payments. If you pay monthly, you would be required to give 30 days prior written notice.

does that mean if i give notice on the 17th of the month, I have to leave by the 17th of the next month, even though I pay rent on the 1st of the month

It is a 30 day notice, as opposed to a one month notice (required in most other states). So, if you give notice on the 17th, your tenancy ends on the 17th of the following month (or whatever date is 30 days). You would pay prorated rent for the partial month.
