My wife forgot to shut the shower completely and it flooded her apartment and the one below. The shower is in the bathtub and it has a drain. I am guessing it is patrially the drain problem. Or else would it flood everything and the apt below ? now the apt manager says all the walls need to be torn down for the apt below and we would be laible for it. We donto have renters insurance but the apt below has it. What do we do now? Is it going to be too expensive. This is in Baton Rouge, LA. Please advise. Thank you
If the drain has been previously working without any problems, it is going to be difficult to dispute that they are partially to blame. You would need an independent plumber to confirm that the drain was improperly installed or there was some defect to it which was the cause of the water cumulation. That is as much as you can do. As to expense, that will depend on the local market as to how much repairs will cost. Sorry to be the bearer of such bad news.
