Have had a 03 diesel beetle for 3 years and have never had a cold start problem. Someone told me the intake manifold could be dirty and it needs removed and cleaned. If this is true and the glow plugs have already been replaced, is there a way to clean it without removal. Hard starts anything below 35 degrees F. Or do you have another idea.

ACCEPTED Check Mark

Hio Customer (name blocked for privacy);

There is a cold start assist valve on the intake manifold. This is not giving the needed extra fuel to the engine during your cold start. It is conterolled by the on board computer of the vehicle. What activated it is a temprature sensor that tells the computer when the motor is cold enough to require the extra squirt of fuel. Most likely it is not functionong as it should.

Go to your local auto parts store and get a new temprature sensor. Tell the counterperson what your problem is and he will give you the proper part and if needed the location of it on the motor.

If this has answered your question click the green ACCEPT button.

If you have other concerns in this matter please reply here in this thread.

After you click ACCEPT. Please leave feedback.

I am going to accept this answer but no auto parts store was able to help because they need a more specific part name or number. I will call the dealer in am to see if they can come up with the proper nomenclature so I can identify what you are referencing to. I'll let you know

Called VW dealer and they said the reason there is no part is that the advice I received was for a gasoline engine not a diesel so you got paid for giving wrong info. Spend it well
