Question

When attempting to change the oven light in my Kenmore XXX.XXXX, I neglected to read the manual that suggested I cut the power before starting (always a good idea), I unscrewed the light fixture assembly from the upper left hand corner of the oven (unnecessary since a metal clip holds the glass cover for the bulb in place). When I got the fixture unscrewed and started to pull it away from the inside of the oven, I heard a loud pop and the oven digital clock and controls stopped working. The top burners still work and the pop didn''t trip my circuit breaker. I''m wondering if I need to just replace the light fixture, it as a small brown mark on it, or if I''ve ruined the oven controls and should start looking for a new one. Also, would it be worth it to have a repair-person look at it? The range was relatively inexpensive (around $400.00).

Reply to Edward's Post: The complete model number listed on the inside of the oven drawer is 911.94402301. I think 9440 denotes the color. On the manual it says that the last four digits indicate color number. The serial number is 4A299878Q also listed on the bottom oven drawer. Thanks for your help!

Answer

Replacing the light socket will not correct the problem, although I do not believe you have done enough damage to warrant replacing the appliance. I would bet if you or an appliance repair person checked the wiring there would be an indication of a burnt wire or a burnt trace on the circuit board. The repair should be much less than replacing the range. Have you checked all the breakers on your electrical panel? The burners use 220 volts and the problem you are having is with the 110 volt circuit.

Reply to Edward's Post: Is replacing a circuit board within the oven something a novice could do?

When you say check the breaker, do you mean the circuit breaker box for my house? Are there circuit breakers within the oven too? There is only one plug coming from my oven, a 220 volt plug. Could you give me some idea of what a typical in-home repairmen might charge for such a repair?

Thanks for your help.

Accepted Answer

Replacing the circuit board is plug and play and should be a task that you can do. There are no circuit breakers in the oven. Look inside at the wires and circuit boards, It should be easy to see the burnt wires, connections or boards. They will look burnt. The part will cost between $100 to $150. If you do not wish to do it yourself replacement of the range might be the best option since most companies are going to charge at least $100 for labor. You would have close to the value of the range is repair and parts cost.
