From what you have described, it appears that you may have a replicated piece and the 2/76 means that 76 were reproduced and the one that you own is the 2nd piece.
The original pieces were made in the late 1700's through the early 1800's. It was an art form and the artists did not number them.
There is also the possibility that a previous collector etched the bottom of his collection prior to letting it go. The numbers would then only apply to his collection and not a reproduction.
If you have had this for a long while or if it is a family keepsake that has been passed down it would not hurt to take it to a certified antique dealer. The originals are currently going for about $300.00.
