Question

I have a toshiba Model# 20HL85 (E) LCD flat panel tv/monitor. The television was working fine ever since I bought it a little over a year ago. I moved into a new house this week, plugged it in and nothing. The set did turn on once after hooking it up but I can't get it to come on again.

Info Request

Hello XXXXXXXXX,

Thank you for asking your question on Just Answer.

Are you sure you have power to the TV?

Is there any indication that the TV is on? (Lights or noises?)

Have you tried it with DVD or tape?

What have you tried to correct the problem?

When you say it came on once, did it play normally or did it turn itself off?

Thank you again for trusting us with your problem.

Please reply as soon as possible so that we can finish answering your question.

Reply to Edward's Post: There is definetly power to the outlet that the tv is plugged into. An xbox works fine in the same outlet.
There are no lights or noises at all.
Haven't tried a DVD tape or anything on the tv since it won't power on I thought that would be pointless.
I tried running the ac adapter through a surge protector and directly into the wall. I tried plugging the an xbox, ps2 other components into the same wall outlet (on a power strip) at the same time as the television and tried the tv plugged in solo. I tried wiggling the input (ac adapter) just in case there was some sort of short in the line.

When I plugged the tv in I hit the power button once and nothing happened. I then hit it a few times and nothing happened. About a minute later the tv did come on. However, I am unsure if it just came on by istelf or if it was a delayed response.

Accepted Answer

Hopefully the problem is in the AC power adapter that supplies power to the TV. This can be tested with a Volt/Ohm meter. There is also a possibility that the firm ware in the TV has gotten corrupted. This will require the set to be sent for repair to solve that problem. Another possibility is the safety circuitry in the TV shutting it down when it detects a problem. In the move a cold solder joint may have happened. These can be very difficult to locate without the needed equipment. To diagnose the problem will require special test equipment and the skills to know how to operate it. The cold solder joint will have to be re soldered. If a cold solder connection is not found the problem will be in the electronics of the TV. After the defective parts are identified those parts will need to be removed and re soldered back into the circuit boards. Many times these components are surface mount technology. This requires special skills that even the best electronic tech my have a problem working with. This is not a DIY project. I wish I could tell you there was a button to push that would make your TV work again but that is not the case. Click here if you no longer have the manual for the TV.
