Question

I was away for 10 days. When I returned the fridge was defrosted - and it continues to be! I unplugged it and replugged it into another outlet, thinking perhaps the outlet was suddenly not working. What could be wrong? The temperature control shows the correct temp. - but it's not working. The lights are on. The ice maker isn't working and there's no noise from the fridge. No other appliance is not working. This is a relatively new fridge - and we've never had any problems before. It's probably about 6 years old now.

It's a Jenn-Aire side-by-side fridge.
Model JCB2388GRW.
I've never had a problem before and can't imagine what the problem is now. The fridge is not cold. I've cleaned the coil and behind the fridge. If it did need to be cleaned (it wasn't that dirty) how long would it take the fridge to start working again? Perhaps the freezer door was not closed properly - i.e. something was preventing it from fully closing?

Accepted Answer

If the freezer door was ajar, this would not keep the refridgerator from getting cold once the door was closed again. It could take up to 24 hours for it to get to the proper temprature though. I would bet that the adaptive defrost control has become defective. This is the newer version of the defrost timer. It is possible that is stuck on the defrost mode. This would cause the problem you are experiencing. I can not gaurentee this is the problem or that it is the only problem the refridgerator has. Due to the cost of the adaptive defrost control I would reccomend an appliance repair person be called to diagnose what the problem is. The adaptive defrost control could have caused the heating element to burn out if it were left on for a long time.

Reply to Edward's Post: where is the adaptive defrost control? Is it visible? How would the fridge have gotten stuck on the defrost mode? I don't see anything with the word defrost on it - including the temperature guide.
Thanks for your help Edward.

Answer

The adaptive defrost control board is very near the lights in the refrigerator. The image below shows it's location.

The board requires disassembly to get to it. Almost all new refrigerators are self defrosting. The adaptive defrost control is what tells the refrigerator to go into the defrost mode. While the refrigerator is in the defrost mode the compressor will not operate, the heater in the freezer will come on, and I believe the ice maker is deactivated, but I am not positive about the ice maker part. The adaptive defrost control works automatically and is electronic. The electronic parts in it can go bad. If water happens to get on the adaptive defrost control * it can short out. If the door was open this could have caused water to drip on the board and this would short it out.

Thanks for your help Edward. So I guess I'll have to call the repair guy and have him get the part. Or do you think I should do something else?
