Question

I recently adopting a cat from my friends mother. She is preparing to move and "Sugar" will not be able to go with. I am a college student, with 3 room mates. Currently there are no other pets in the house. We have had cats and dogs before. Sugar is (I believe) ab out 3-4 years old and is a Calico (spelling? sorry). She was brought over to my house 6 days ago and isn't adapting at all!! She has stayed hidden every day and is very upset when I find her. Hissing and pawing (declawed) is her general response hidden in small areas throughout my house. She has hardly eaten anything at all. No dry food at all that I can tell nor a whole can of food yet! She's maybe eaten 3/4 can the last 6 days! :( I've recently moved her food to the basement (where she tends to hide) and her litter box hoping to get her to eat. What else can I do!? I can't even find her tonight :( PLEASE HELP, I am fearing she will starve! XXXXX@XXXXXX.XXX THANK YOU! Time is limited I fear!

Dear friend,

I know you are really upset but please do not worry about this too much. She will not let herself starve

It is normal for cats in a new location to scope out a "safe spot"and remain there until the have detemined that the new home is safe and no enemies lurk to "get them".

It usually takes three days to a week for her to acclimate and realize that ths is now her home.

Being in a new hom is extremely stressful and that is combined with her being pulled out of her fomer home -put in a carrier and dropped off. Then moves again spells Stress with a capital T for her.

Right now she sees food but she really do not know(or care) how it got there To a cat - food is love and the CAN BE BRIBED!! As soon as they figure out that YOU are the "food person" they will consider you their mommy.

Leave her food water and litter in the room she is in. She will eat when it is quiet like at night I promise!

Once she start walking around you can try to get her to take food from you.

Begin by feeding her little pieces or chicken out of your hand. Make sure she sees that YOU bring the food. She will very soon associate you with her meals and be warm and loving to you. Any one else you want them to warm up to like kids - have that person hand feed.

Hissing ia a normal method of communication for acat - its means "I'm scared - or Watch it"

I would not pull her out or force her . Just sit there as calm and nonchalant as possible and very soon she will come to you.

Also get a feather wand or lazar pointer and try to move it around - that will engage her in play as much as possible,

Please let me know how it is going. If you have any questions along the way.I will always be here for you.

May God bless you for adopting an adult kitty.

Sincerest best wishes,

Terri
