Question

I have a Maytag Washer that is about 7 years old. It started making a loud noise during the spin cycle. Also, the clothes constantly get off balanced when washing. The tub can be easily turned by hand when the machine is off. Any suggestions?

The Model # is: PAV2300AWW. There is no water under the washer. Yes, the noise only occurs during the sping cycle and continues until it ends. Everything else seems to work ok, except for the clothes always getting off balanced.

Thanks

Sorry to tell you from the information you have provided, I suspect that the bearings in the hub bearings are going bad. The replacement needed is a very labor intensive repair. Most appliance repair shops will charge in the ball park of $250 or more for the repair. Many will recommend that the washer be replaced. The washer has to almost be completely disassembled to replace the bearings and seals. More than normal hand tools are also needed. I do not recommend this as a DIY project. If you washer is not leaking now it will be soon. Now to address the off balance condition. The washer must be level and sitting on a sound surface. There are springs that support the tub that may have broken or become weak. Replacing these springs should stop the off balance problem.

Reply to Edward's Post: I was veiwing another website and read about a person with similar problems as mine, with the same kind of washing machine. It was suggested that the brake may be bad. It was mentioned that if you could turn the tub by hand when the machine is off, then the brake is wore out. Is it possible that this could be the problem? If so, can it be easily replaced?

Thanks

Answer

From the information you have provided I do not believe the brake is the problem. This model Maytag is known for having bearing problems. Replacing the brake is also a difficult repair and in your washer it will not correct the problem. Look at the image below.

The brake is part number 21 in the image.
