Question

Hi my cat has been vomiting, is very sleepy, not eating but is occasionally drinking water then sits over his water bowl. he is almost 8 years old. I have just come back from vet, he has given him anti-inflammatry, anti-biotic and anti-vomiting injections. He said he thinks he has a bacterial infection as his tempreture is 103. He is seeing him again tomorrow, is there anything else that can be done?

Hi Jo,

The most likely cause of this in cat his age is an abscessed tooth. Sitting oer the water bowl and not drinking is a sympton of dehydration.

The et should hae given him subQ fluids which hydrate for 30 hours.

There is a lot you can do at home for your boy.

If your cat is not diabetic begin by giving him two droppers (cc size) of unflavored pedialyte every ten minutes for an hour. Next water down(plain water) canned cat food or baby food chicken or turkey with no onion or garlic and give only one dropper every ten minutes for another hour. Wait two hours and repeat both. When he feels hydrated he will lick up the gruel on his own.

You can use tuna water or milk to hydrate as well.

Boil chicken or fish as the scent of food cooking awakens the appetite sensor in the brain.

Please get started ASAP and let me know how things are going. I will always be here for you and your boy.

Very sincerely,

Terri

Thank you so much Terri, I have Lectade will this be ok to Hydrate him? The tuna water, I have a can of tuna would this be ok if I mix it with water? I lost a male cat with similar symptoms back in 2000 and I am terified I will lose him. Thank you once again. Jo

Hi Jo,

You must be in the UK where pedialyte is lectade. See if your boy will drink tuna water. If not give him droppers of lectade straight away.

Make sure he is able to urinate and not blocked.

The antibiotics can take two doses to make him feel better. You must support his hydration til he starts eating,

I will be here to help.

Warm regards,

Terri

Info Request

Hi Jo,

Is there any chance he swallowed a non food item?

is he able to potty normally?

did the vet give him any subQ fluids.

Thanks,

Terri

I don't know if he hs swallowed anything? No the vet didn't give him any SubQ fluids. He did pass urine this evening, at first he seemed a little brighter, then about an hour later started to get agitated, his pupils are very enlarged and his leg became un-usable. His back leg was like that a few days ago but seems ok now. I don't know what to do with him. Jo

I really dont like the leg swelling like that. Is there a vet open now that could see him?

was he checked for high blood pressure and diabetes?

The leg isn't swelling it just won't work, as if it is paralised? No vets open now as it is 10.44pm here. Not checked for blood pressure or diabetes? I did ask him if he thought it might be diabetes, he said he didn't think so. He is trying all the basic treatments first. I think he should have taken blood and urine for testing. So far he has treated him for tape worms and for an infected tooth and slowly he gets worse. I fear I am going to lose him. Jo

Jo,

Did recently have a wound or scratch or a tick bite?

are his gums pale?

what have you given him by mouth today?

does the leg feel hot or cold?

Thanks,

Terri

Yes he had a tick, which I removed last about ten days ago. His leg is cold, where the good one is warm. His gums are quite pink and all he has had by mouth today is water, lectade water and tuna water. Jo

Info Request

Dear Jo,

The coldness of the leg may indicate a blood clot. Dont stress him with any more fluids.Just get him to a vet the second they open

You can give in a half a baby aspirin just in case of a clot.

Please let me know how he is.

I am praying for him

Warm regards,

Terri

Hi Terri, I have just come back from the vet, he has kept him in. They are going to put a drip up for fluids, do blood tests and monitor him. He has now started twitching and is very distressed. I think they are also going to x-ray his spine. I did ask if he thought it might be a blot clot, or a stroke, but he didn't think so.I know he is going to die, I am so devastated as he is my special boy. It is a black day for me, he has been such a pleasure to have around. Will let you know the results ok. Best wishes Jo

I am 61 and semi retired, don't have much money but I would have sold everything to pay his fees if he would get better, he is like my child now my girls have grown up. I will write as soon as I hear anything, thank you again and God Bless. Jo
