Hi,
Even on a different a car this can be a problem. There are literally hundreds of reasons that the check engine light can come on, ranging from vacuum hose leak to transmission or engine sensor, to engine misfire, to emissions problem. This is true of every vehicle made since the mid-90s.
Now, on yours, you have two choices besides paying for diagnostic time to pull codes. 1) you can have codes read for free at Autozone and they will also tell you what it relates to, and you can decide whether to repair yourself or have a shop do it. Sometimes though the code is not straightforward and more troubleshooting is needed.
2) I can can give you diagnostic codes and how to retreive them yourself without a scanner. Once you have the code and cross reference it with the DTC list, you can re-open this question and I can help further with trouble shoooting at no additional charge.

Ok, make sure they give you the code numbers, that way I can look up the exact definition and any diagnostic troubleshooting that is required.
And as I said, it wont cost you anything additional
