Question

I have an 83 Subaru GL 4wd. It runs normally when it is cold. The choke kicks in and it sounds good while it is warming up. When the engine reaches normal operating temp, it dies. I can keep it running if I keep my foot on the accelerator, but the engines surges. If I don't give it any gas it dies immediately. For some reason, the electric fan wont come on and it eventually gets very hot and boils over. I know the fan motor is good and I have replaced the thermo switch with one from a u-pull it. The thermostat is new also. I have replaced the fuel pump and rebuilt the carb. I also replaced the ignition coil along with a new cap and rotor, but I am still having the same problem. I replaced the fuel pump control unit (rpm sensor) with one from the junkyard to no avail, so I wired the new fuel pump directly in to the fuse block so the fuel pump runs when the key is on. I am at my wits end! I only paid $500 for the car and have spent another $200 since.

Answer

If the over heating makes no sense, then you need to check the flow of the water pump. The impellers may be corroded, and the pump is turning, but not pumping. As far as the stalling, check the EGR valve for being stuck open,or any other vacuum leaks.

Reply to Paul's Post: Paul, thanks for the heads up on the EGR valve. If it is stuck, would the car still run normally when it is cold? Also, I have noticed flow through the radiator when the thermostat opens. It's not great, but there is flow. The electric fan is not coming on at all. I have tested the motor (hot wired) and it is fine. Is there a relay for the fan, and if so, where is it?

Download this info.If the problem is occuring after the engine warms up,then it would be to much fuel. The fuel to air ratio drops to 1 to 17, apposed to 1 to 7.when the engine is cold.Choke not opening. Also if you have a vacuum gage attach it,try to keep it running below 1000 rpms.Let me know what you find. How is the timing belts?
