Info Request

Hi fellow Connetican.

I'm here in Fairfield County and I'll definetely assist you with this problem. Just wanted to ask you a few questions before I recommend a treatment plan.

How big, in gallons, is the tank that the sick fish is in?

How long has the fish been sick?

What leads you to believe the fish has septicemia?

He's living aline in a 10Gallon tank. I just cleaned it out and thoroughly cleaned the gravel and rocks. I have a new filter and I even scrubbed out the filters motor. Leon has been sluggish for about two days now and has some nasty looking red blood-like streaks in all his fins. He's usually very livly so I noticed right away that he was lying on the bottom of his tank.
He's quite large for a goldfish I won at a carnival. I'd say he's about 9oz. Thank you for your help. My son really loves this fish and so do I.

Thanks for the information and by the way your diagnosis seems quite accurate.

The first thing I'd like you to do is have the water tested for ammonia and nitrite levels.
My reasoning for this is that the majority of fish diseases stem from water quality problems and as you mentioned that you thoroughly cleaned the tank and have appeared to start with new water there is a high probability that there's ammonia and/or nitrite present.

Both ammonia and nitrite are deadly to fish and are caused by not having enough good bacteria to consume them. Listed below is a link to a page that will explain something called tank cycling.

Back to water testing. If you don't have a test kit available you can take a water sample to your local pet shop and they will usually test for free. Results should be ammonia and nitrite=-0-.
No other results are acceptable/good. The reason I am stressing the testing issue is because no treatment nor medication in the world will cure a fish if ammonia and nitrite are present in the water. Now if there is ammonia and/or nitrite present you should begin to do daily 20% water changes until ammonia and nitrites are eliminated.

Once ammonia/nitrite are eliminated you can then begin the recommended medication I will give you. Now if the water tests out -0- for ammonia and nitrite then no immediate water changes are necessary.

Septicemia is a bacterial infection of the blood, basically blood poisoning same as in humans.
The best medicine I know of to treat this type of disorder is called Triple Sulfa. Listed below is a link that will show you the product. Just follow the directions on the product label for use but please remember to test the water first as this medicine will prove useless if ammonia or nitrite are present.

I have also listed below a third link to an excellent goldfish site that will supply you with a lot of information about goldfish care. You can refer to it as needed as it is a very useful resource.

Please let me know if you have any questions on anything I've written and I'll be more than happy to elaborate.

Thank you. I use an Aquasafe water conditioner that is suppose to deal with the ammonia and nitrite issue, but I will also have the water tested. I am ordering the sulfa now, it will take a few days to deliver. Will my fish make it that long, he looks a little better since I cleaned the tank. the ten packets in the order will that be enough. How many time do I treat hima nd for how long?

Answer

Aquasafe is a great product but it's really more geared toward making common tap water usable in an aquarium at a moment's notice. In the long run it will not control ammonia/nitrite levels particularily nitrite.

When you cleaned the tank, if you started with 100% new water, I strongly urge you to read and understand the cycling link I passed along as it's vital information concerning aquariums.

With regards XX XXXX fish lasting until the medicine arrives--if you keep the water- ammonia and nitrite free he'll have a good chance of making it, but those levels must be monitored.
I know it sounds like overkill with my repetition
concerning ammonia and nitrite but these two are the biggest killers of tropical fish in the aquarium world. In nature they do not present a problem as they don't accumulate or exist but as an aquarium is a closed-in eco system they definitely do exist.

As for treatment duration and instructions--listed below is a link to the product which will give exact instructions on usage. I would try one dosage which is four treatments and if that doesn't work try a second dosage which is another four treatments but the link will explain in better detail.
