Question

I have a 10 month old puppy who is a Boston/Fox Terrier mix. We've been to 4 different puppy training classes and spend approximately 45 minutes training throughout the day. She still can't walk properly on a leash and it is hard to get to her stay focused on me. I had hoped as she got older, she would settle down some. With a dog this size (17 pounds), at what age will she start to mature and calm down?

When you say "still can't walk properly on leash" what is she doing?

What specific things have you tried to get her to stop?

Is she an only dog?

She pulls, is distracted by everything (dogs, squirrels, people, cars, leaves blowing). I used a Easy Walk harness for approximately 7 months and throughout 2 sessions of puppy school and advanced puppy school (all were based on clikcer training and we went 2-3 times a week). I then called Bark Busters and am now using a modified chain collar. It is mostly webbing, but has chain on it so I can pull and correct, but without any possibility of choking. I have been working with her for an additional two months doing attentativeness training (having her on leash and trying to get her to focus on me, when she tries to pass or head off in another direction, I turn and go the other way. If she doesn't follow, I turn my back on her until she gets that I'm wanting her to follow. I do not jerk her leash). Then I spend another 5-10 minutes trying to get her to heel by praising when she's either next to or behind me and correcting with collar and growl when she tries to pass or heads off another direction. We generally have to switch between walking and attentativeness even after the 10 minutes or so of attentativeness because she quits focusing on me or finds something else more interesting.
And yes, she an only dog and my first dog as an adult which is why I'm trying so hard to train her properly.

Answer

You certainly are trying hard enough to get her to focus that is for sure. The turning the other way and using a halti collar is the way that I leash train my dogs and we only train for 15 minutes at a time and work up from that. Too much can cause them to get bored and make them NOT want to do what you ask of them. Hold off on the growling..she isn't getting it and it may not be the what she will respond to....try boiling up some chicken...cut in tiny pieces and try that to keep her next to you and focused on you...yummy things come from this chick and if I want them, I sure as heck am gonna watch her closely or I will miss getting one. :) Many people think that if you use treats the dog will only respond when you have them...not true...they don't get them every single time they do good but they know if they don't do good they aren't going to get anything. ;) Hope this makes sense and she is still a puppy and a small hyper breed at that..she will calm down once she hits a year or so old. :) Good luck and let me know if you need to discuss this further. My ultimate question is when can I generally expect a dog of this size to start calming down and acting like an adult instead of a puppy?

Accepted Answer

Like I said above, she will likely start to calm down around a year or so old. If she is not yet spayed, consider getting her done and that will also calm her down a bit. :) Smaller dogs can be a bit hyper for years, but since you are doing the training, she will likely get much better than most so keep it up. :)

Great, so I'm doing everything I should - training, spaying, exercising - and I still have a monster for a dog. Lucky me.

Answer

Think about maybe signing her up for agility classes or doggy daycare to let her burn off some of that excess energy that she has. This is a breed that just goes and goes and goes...she needs a job even in down time to keep her mind and body active. Several walks throughout the day, doggy daycare or play dates at the dog park could be just the thing she needs. But yes, you are doing everything right and you have no idea how often people are not. Be consistant and it will pay off in the end. If you would like to find a behavioral trainer in your area to help check for one here:
