He began his service with the Marines in 1952. In 1959, he went to the Marine Reserves, where he was a member until he retired in 1990, with the rank of Colonel.
He worked at Parris Island, Quantico, and Came Lejune. While he was in the reserves, he was out of Johnstown.
He won many awards including:
- American Spirit Honor Medal
- Navy Distinguished Service Medal
- Bronze Star with Combat "V" ("Valor")
- two Purple Hearts
- Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry
